Student Agency is a complex and loaded term. It is often associated or used synonomously with personalized learning, student centered, student focused, or differentiated learning. While there are overlapping characteristics and strategies used when executing all these ideas, student agency is unique as it provides the power of decision making to students.

Providing students with the ability to decide the course of study or how they accomplish a task not only provides them opportunities to learn content but also soft skills, time management, and see the opportunity costs of their actions. Students with a lot of agency, develop a growth mindset, are focused more on academic growth (not test scores), are more curious about the content they interact with (therefore learning it in greater depth), and are better prepared to succeed in learning throughout their life.
